Compensation obviously does matter when it comes to attracting and retaining staff. It is for example very rare that someone will accept a salary reduction in order to change jobs and there have to extremely compelling reasons for them to do so. However, compensation is only part of the jigsaw. A high salary may enable you to recruit the ideal candidate, but there are many other factors that will determine if you can retain and motivate them once they become an employee.
